The Minority Report

Problem starts when a member of the minority does as well or slightly better than some of the majority groups.

There is, of course, the more obvious problem of the majority having more and grabbing more and more, just because they can.

In Utopia, the benevolent State would use tools like technology and good sense to ensure an equal society.

In the real world, corrupt citizens and ineffective government institutions make that Utopia an impossible dream.

The corrupt plant the seed of trouble. Once it takes root, no one can remove that. The hooligans in the majority will ensure that. Are these hooligans united by religion and/or caste? Are they just mercenaries protecting and expanding their turf for maximum gain?

The government institutions, even the police, will think it is less troublesome to go with the mob. There will be excuses. They will shift the blame to the sufferer. No one will even think of the judicial system for grievance redressal. Who said that the government should be for all and not just some majority? Isn't that greater good?

As for the politicians, they work only for the votes that will take them first past the post. That is supposed to be democracy.

That is the boring ground reality.

It is the mentality of the people involved that is more interesting.

Even the aggrieved amongst the minority usually accept their fate. They become resigned to be second-class citizens, grateful for charity thrown their way. The young feel the hatred building to the point of self-annihilation. The elders advise against that, they call it foolishness to stir the hornets' nest. They are scared these days, to protest, to walk around in the neighbourhood. They talk of the good ol' times when life was good and everyone good together.

The young don't even bother to ask if the elders saw the friendly majority bare their fangs when the minority just seemed appeased, that is, when they seemed like they got their basic human rights.

Then, there is the mentality of the observers. Their friendly suggestion to the minority is: move out. Go to a place where you are the majority. There will be some minority there you can terrorize.

You might get what you need, a decent life.

(This is, of course, about our struggle with zero water supply, just a kilometer or so from the office of the Chief Minister. This is also about a losing battle against the religious and the caste groups that decide everything in my area. This is about ma-f*ckers.)
